Placement Day: What to Expect When You Bring Your Bun Home
A Meaningful Beginning
Placement Day is filled with anticipation.
After weeks of watching your rabbit grow and learning about their personality, this is the moment when everything becomes real. It's the beginning of your life together, and we want that transition to feel calm, welcoming, and thoughtfully guided.
Whether your rabbit has already been matched or you are finalizing that decision during your visit, this time is designed to feel comfortable, unhurried, and clear.
Arriving at Hot Cross Buns
When you arrive, you will be welcomed into our comfortably lived-in home.
It is not styled for a magazine, but it is full of warmth, laughter, and animals, who are often the source of that laughter. During your visit, our pets are settled in another room so they do not become a distraction. This time is meant to focus on you and your rabbit, allowing for a calm and intentional introduction.
For Families Still in the Matching Process
Some families arrive without a final match already in place.
In those cases, we prepare a small group of rabbits who, based on our conversations, seem most likely to be a good fit for your home, your pace of life, and the type of personality you are hoping for.
You will have the opportunity to meet them one at a time in a quiet, low-pressure setting. This allows you to observe how each rabbit interacts, not only with you, but within the environment itself.
During this time, we are also observing.
As the visit progresses, certain rabbits may naturally be ruled out, while others begin to stand out. The process is not rushed. Instead, it allows space for a clear preference to emerge, one that feels comfortable and well-matched rather than uncertain.
Once that connection becomes clear, the visit continues in the same way as it would for a pre-matched rabbit.
Getting Acquainted
If you have already been matched with your Bun, he or she will be waiting in an exercise pen in our living space. After those first moments of excitement, we will bring your Bun out and place him or her on your lap so you can begin getting acquainted.
Your rabbit is free to explore on our blanket-covered couches and may choose to hop, investigate, or settle quietly as you interact. During this time, we will talk with you, answer questions, and observe the interaction.
Some families feel comfortable very quickly, while others take more time. Both are perfectly fine. This part of the visit allows us to confirm that the match feels right and gives you space to begin building a connection.
Paperwork and Preparation
Once you have had time together, we will move into the practical side of placement.
We will review the placement paperwork and give you time to complete the forms. Copies will be made for your records, and any remaining questions can be addressed along the way.
We will also go through your Bunny Bag, explain what is included, and invite you to choose a snuggle mat from a selection of fleece options. Your cash payment is taken during this stage as well.
Saying Goodbye and Heading Home
When everything is ready, we will help you settle your Bun into the carrier.
Goodbyes are always a meaningful moment. These rabbits have been part of our daily lives from the very beginning, and while it is never easy to part with them, it is also something we look forward to as they begin their lives with their new families.
We are happy to help carry supplies or assist you to your vehicle if needed.
Beginning Life Together
Before you leave, we will remind you that you are always welcome to reach out with questions or concerns.
We truly enjoy receiving updates and photos as your rabbit settles into their new home. Watching them continue to grow and thrive with their families is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
Placement Day is meant to feel calm, supportive, and memorable. It's not just a handoff, but the beginning of a relationship that continues beyond that first visit.
