Considering a Rabbit from Hot Cross Buns?
Welcome — we’re glad you’re here.
Bringing a rabbit home is a long-term commitment, and finding the right match matters deeply to both the rabbit and the family welcoming him or her home.
At Hot Cross Buns, our rabbits are raised as indoor companions and known closely as individuals from the very beginning. Because we spend so much time living alongside them each day, we become familiar with their personalities, sensitivities, confidence levels, interaction styles, and the environments where they are most likely to thrive.
That understanding shapes the way we approach placement.
Rather than placing rabbits first-come, first-served, we take time to consider temperament, lifestyle, expectations, and long-term compatibility so placements are more successful for both the rabbit and the family involved.
The Hot Cross Buns are not raised in the background; they are known and cherished.
Families unfamiliar with how we approach matching and placement may also find our Thoughtful Rabbit Placement page helpful before applying.
If you are still learning what daily rabbit care looks like, our Rabbit Care & Guidance page is a helpful place to begin before moving forward.
Before You Apply
How We Raise & Place Our Rabbits
Our rabbits are raised indoors as companions and are placed as family pets. We do not place rabbits for outdoor or hutch-only living.
We believe rabbits thrive best when they are:
included naturally in daily family life
spayed or neutered for long-term health and stability
understood as individuals with unique temperaments
placed with long-term commitment and realistic expectations in mind
Some rabbits are highly social and interactive. Others are more observant, sensitive, or steady in temperament and settle more comfortably into quieter environments. Those differences matter more than many families initially realize.
A rabbit who feels confident and secure in one home may feel overwhelmed in another. Thoughtful matching helps create smoother transitions, stronger long-term bonds, and more successful companionship over time.
Because of this, we take time to carefully consider both the rabbit and the home before placement decisions are made.
Babies & Adult Rabbits
Every rabbit here is raised and placed with the same level of care, whether baby, junior, or adult.
Many families are naturally drawn to babies, and when available, they are introduced on the Available Buns page after temperament evaluations begin.
We also occasionally have older rabbits seeking homes. Adult rabbits can make deeply rewarding companions because their personalities are already more established, and many are already spayed or neutered.
Rather than focusing primarily on age, we encourage families to consider temperament, lifestyle, energy level, and long-term compatibility.
What We Ask of Our Families
Families who work well with us are generally prepared to:
keep their rabbit indoors as a companion
spay or neuter their rabbit if not already altered
learn about proper diet, housing, enrichment, and veterinary care
provide long-term commitment and daily interaction
travel to Oberlin, Ohio for placement
You do not need to have everything perfectly figured out before reaching out. Most families are still learning when they first begin exploring rabbit ownership.
What matters most is a willingness to prepare thoughtfully, ask questions honestly, and follow through consistently over time.
Placement Fees
Placement fees reflect age and spay/neuter status and are consistent regardless of color or markings.
Unaltered junior rabbits (2–5 months)
$350
Neutered bucks (under ~4 years)
$400
Spayed does (under ~5 years)
$450
Neutered bucks (5-6 years)
$250
Spayed does (6-7 years)
$250
We place rabbit bucks up to approximately six years of age, and rabbit does up to approximately seven years of age, mainly as companions for rabbits who have lost their bonded rabbit friend. Beyond that stage, rabbits remain with us as permanent residents.
Junior rabbits (rabbits under six months of age) remain available as unaltered companions through approximately 4.5 months of age. At that point, those who have not yet been placed are removed from active listings as they are prepared for their spay/neuter procedure.
Following recovery, they may later return to the Available Buns page as altered companion rabbits at the corresponding adult placement fee. This approach allows us to prioritize long-term health, wellbeing, and smoother transitions into permanent companion homes while continuing to evaluate each rabbit’s developing personality and needs as he/she matures.
Policies & Agreements
We believe clear expectations help create better long-term outcomes for both rabbits and families.
Please review the following documents carefully before submitting a Placement Form:

Timing & Readiness
This process is intended for families who are realistically prepared to welcome a rabbit within approximately the next 1–8 weeks.
Many families who move forward have already:
begun preparing an indoor housing setup
identified a rabbit-savvy exotic veterinarian
researched rabbit diet and daily care
considered how a rabbit will realistically fit into long-term routines and responsibilities
Thoughtful preparation helps create smoother transitions and more successful placements for everyone involved.
Next Step: Placement Form
The Placement Form is the starting point for more thoughtful conversation about compatibility, expectations, and long-term fit.
It helps us better understand your home, lifestyle, experience level, and what kind of rabbit may thrive most successfully with your family.
If you feel prepared to move forward within the next 1–8 weeks, we would love to learn more about you and your home.
