A Rabbit's Sixth Week of Life

When Change Becomes Less Visible

By the sixth week of life, the pace of visible change begins to slow.

Kits continue to grow larger and stronger, but the dramatic day-to-day differences seen in earlier weeks are no longer as obvious. The changes that do occur during this stage are often less physical and more internal.

From the outside, it may seem like a quieter week.

A Shift Toward Stillness

During this stage, behavior often takes on a different tone.

The kits may pause for brief moments, sitting quietly with a still, almost thoughtful presence. These pauses are short, but noticeable. It can feel as though they realize their time together is coming to an end and there's something ahead of them that they can't yet see or understand.

It is a subtle shift, but a meaningful one.

A Week of Adjustment

This stage can feel like a reset.

Kits who were previously very active may seem quieter. Others may try new behaviors, as though testing what feels natural to them.

In most cases, this phase passes within a few days. Many kits return to the temperament they showed earlier. Occasionally, however, something new remains, adding another layer to their developing personality.

Because of this, we observe carefully and remain open to what each kit shows us during this time.

Understanding Personality at This Stage

The sixth week can be one of the more challenging times to describe temperament.

Just as patterns begin to feel familiar, they may shift again. What seemed consistent a few days earlier may not feel as clear in the moment.

Rather than assuming a complete change, we allow time for patterns to re-establish. In most cases, what we're seeing is temporary. In others, it is the beginning of something more lasting and becomes another facet of their temperaments.

We spend a lot of time observing and adding to descriptions of them as we prepare their listings.

The “Gangly” Phase

Toward the end of the sixth week, some kits—particularly false dwarfs—begin to enter a more awkward stage of growth.

Their bodies lengthen. Feet and ears may appear slightly oversized, and their proportions can feel temporarily unbalanced.

This stage is short-lived, but obvious. Much like adolescence in other animals, it is a period where growth happens quickly, and coordination catches up shortly after.

With time, balance returns, and their features settle into proportion.

The Beginning of Transition

From the rabbitry perspective, the sixth week marks an important shift.

This is typically when we begin the process of listing and thoughtfully matching each kit with the family that best suits them. While the kits themselves continue to play and grow as usual, the focus around them begins to change.

They are no longer simply babies in development. They are becoming individuals preparing for their next home.

Learning to Let Go

This stage also brings a quieter emotional shift.

As each kit is matched, we begin to think of them as belonging to their future families. While our care and interaction remain the same, our perspective begins to change.

We start using their new names. We imagine the homes they will enter and the lives they will go on to live.

It's a gradual process, one that allows space for both care and transition. Even with experience, it is never easy.

A Week of Quiet Meaning

The sixth week is not defined by dramatic change, but by depth.

Growth continues, personalities settle, and the next chapter begins to take shape—both for the kits and for those who have cared for them from the beginning.

It is a quieter week, but an important one.
