Companion Rabbit Placement & Spay/Neuter Agreement

This agreement exists to protect the long-term wellbeing of the rabbit and to establish clear, shared responsibility between Hot Cross Buns Holland Lops (“HCB”) and the adopting family (“the Placement Family”). It is intended to provide clarity and accountability for both parties.

1. Standard of Care

The Placement Family agrees to provide humane, attentive care for this rabbit at all times. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Safe, indoor housing in a private residence

  • Daily access to fresh water and unlimited hay

  • A balanced diet appropriate for rabbits

  • Regular exercise and enrichment in a rabbit-proofed environment

  • Veterinary care provided by a rabbit-experienced veterinarian

This rabbit is placed as an indoor companion. The rabbit will not be housed outdoors overnight under any circumstances. Outdoor time, if provided, must be fully supervised and conducted in a secure, predator-safe area. The Placement Family understands that heat, predators, parasites, and unsafe environments pose serious risks to rabbits and agrees to monitor conditions accordingly. Children must be supervised at all times when interacting with this rabbit.

2. Humane Treatment

The Placement Family agrees that this rabbit will never be abused, neglected, or intentionally harmed, nor allowed to be harmed by another person or animal.

3. Housing & Residency

The Placement Family affirms that this rabbit will be kept only in a private residence and that permission has been obtained from the property owner or rental agency if applicable.

4. Health Disclosure & Liability

HCB has disclosed any known health concerns of this rabbit to the best of her knowledge at the time of placement.

The Placement Family understands that rabbits, like all living beings, may develop health conditions in the future.

After placement, HCB cannot control environment, diet, handling, exposure, stress, veterinary decisions, household animals, or accidents. For that reason, HCB is not responsible for illness, injury, damage, loss, or expenses that arise after the rabbit leaves HCB’s care.

5. Breach of Care & Return Requirement

In the event of a material breach of this Agreement — including but not limited to neglect, lack of veterinary care, failure to meet housing standards, unauthorized transfer, breeding, or failure to comply with the Spay/Neuter Agreement — HCB may require the rabbit to be returned to HCB.

6. Return-to-Hot Cross Buns Policy

If at any time the Placement Family is unable or unwilling to keep this rabbit, the Placement Family agrees to notify HCB promptly and to arrange return of the rabbit to Hot Cross Buns Holland Lops.

This rabbit may never be:

  • abandoned

  • surrendered to a shelter or rescue

  • sold, rehomed, transferred, or given away without prior written permission from HCB

  • used for breeding, experimentation, or exchange

If the rabbit passes away, the Placement Family agrees to notify the Breeder.

Spay / Neuter Agreement

Permanent ownership of this rabbit is contingent upon compliance with the following spay/neuter requirements.

7. Spay / Neuter Requirement

The Placement Family agrees that this rabbit will be spayed or neutered as follows:

  • Rabbits placed under six months of age must be spayed or neutered by seven months of age.

  • Rabbits placed six months of age or older must be spayed or neutered within a timeframe agreed upon with Hot Cross Buns.

Proof of spay/neuter, such as a veterinary invoice or record including clinic information and veterinarian signature, must be provided to HCB within fourteen days following surgery.

8. Veterinary Delay Exception

If a licensed veterinarian determines that the rabbit is not yet medically suitable for surgery, the Placement Family must provide written documentation from the veterinarian. The Placement Family agrees to schedule the procedure at the earliest medically appropriate time and to keep HCB informed in writing.

9. Breeding Prohibition

This rabbit may not be bred under any circumstances. Any breeding — whether intentional or due to failure to prevent access to intact rabbits — constitutes a breach of this Agreement. In such an event, the rabbit must be returned to Hot Cross Buns Holland Lops without refund. Any offspring produced as a result of breach must be surrendered to HCB upon request, without refund or compensation.

10. Failure to Comply

Failure to provide proof of spay/neuter by the agreed deadline, without written veterinary exception, constitutes a breach of this Agreement.

In the event of breach:

  • The Placement Family agrees to return the rabbit to HCB in good health

  • No refund will be issued

  • The Placement Family is responsible for transportation costs associated with the return
