Water Bowl or Bottle? Choosing the Best Option for Your Rabbit
Who knew there were so many things to think about when deciding whether your rabbit should drink from a water bottle or a water bowl?
Both options have advantages and drawbacks, and many rabbit owners find themselves wondering which choice is best. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each.
Water Bottles
Many rabbits grow up drinking from water bottles attached to their cages. Bottles are easy to find in pet stores and come in several sizes, with 32-ounce and 64-ounce bottles being the most common for rabbits.
Some styles also offer a choice between regular or wide-mouth openings.
Pro tip: Wide-mouth bottles can be especially helpful during hot weather because they make it easier to add ice and keep the water cool.
Water bottles do have several advantages. The water usually stays clean, spills are less common, and it can be easy to monitor how much your rabbit is drinking.
However, water bottles are not without their problems.
Many bottles are notoriously prone to leaking. They must be hung at just the right angle, and sometimes the metal ball at the tip of the spout needs to be tapped to form a proper seal. If this does not happen, the bottle can slowly drip until it is completely empty.
Some bottles are also difficult to attach to cages or exercise pens, and a few designs make it surprisingly hard to tell whether the bottle is full or empty.
If a bottle leaks or empties without being noticed, a rabbit may be left without water for hours.
Water Bowls or Crocks
Because of these concerns, many rabbit owners prefer a sturdy water bowl or crock.
One of the biggest advantages of a bowl is that it allows rabbits to drink in a more natural position. Instead of stretching their neck upward toward a bottle spout, rabbits can lower their heads comfortably and drink normally.
Many rabbits will choose a bowl of fresh water over a bottle almost every time.
Of course, bowls come with their own challenges.
An energetic rabbit might knock over the bowl during a lively binky session shortly after the owner leaves for work. Rabbits who enjoy digging through their hay may fill the bowl with hay pieces. Others may accidentally contaminate the water with litter, droppings, or even urine.
In these situations, the rabbit may end up without clean drinking water until the owner returns home.
The Best Solution
So what is a rabbit owner supposed to do?
At Hot Cross Buns, we have found that the best solution is simple: we provide both a bottle and a bowl at all times.
This approach offers the best of both options.
If the bowl gets knocked over or contaminated, the rabbit can still drink from the bottle. If the bottle leaks or runs empty, there is still a bowl of water available.
Providing both gives rabbits consistent access to water and adds an extra layer of safety.
A Simple Way to Protect Your Rabbit
Fresh water is essential for a rabbit’s health and digestive system. Dehydration can quickly lead to serious problems, including gastrointestinal stasis.
By offering both a bottle and a bowl, you greatly reduce the chances of your rabbit ever being left without water.
We have used this approach for years and have never regretted it.
If you want to give your rabbit the best possible access to fresh water, a bottle and a bowl together may be the simplest and safest solution.
