Keeping Your Rabbit Cool During Hot Summer Weather
With the hot weather of summer comes the need to help our rabbit friends stay comfortable.
Even if our homes are set at a pleasant 70 degrees, rabbits often prefer cooler temperatures. Their thick fur coats can make warm days feel especially uncomfortable.
Fortunately, there are several simple ways Bun parents can help keep their rabbits cool during the long, hot days of summer.
Chilled Ceramic Tiles
Large ceramic tiles chilled in the freezer make an excellent and safe cooling surface for rabbits.
Many of us have leftover tiles from a home improvement project tucked away somewhere in the house. Instead of collecting dust on a shelf where project leftovers tend to go to die, they can be put to very good use.
Place the tile in the freezer until it is thoroughly chilled. When it's ready, offer it to your rabbit so he or she can lie on it to cool down.
Most rabbits quickly discover how comfortable the cool surface feels. When given a freshly chilled tile, you can almost imagine your bunny letting out a little sigh of relief.
Be sure to wash the tile between uses and store it in a clean plastic bag while freezing so it stays sanitary.
Cool Water Bowls
A small container filled with cool water and a couple of ice cubes can also help a rabbit stay comfortable.
Some rabbits will simply drink the cold water. Others may sprawl next to the bowl and dip an ear into the water. Because rabbits release heat through their ears, cooling them down helps lower their overall body temperature.
It is essentially the rabbit version of a swamp cooler.
Bunny Popsicles
Bunny popsicles are another easy way to help rabbits stay cool.
To make one, crush a small amount of fruit such as blueberries, raspberries, or pineapple in a bit of water. Add a few small pieces of fruit and pour the mixture into an ice cube tray. Freeze until solid.
Serve the frozen cube in a small bowl or saucer. The scent of the fruit will usually attract the rabbit’s attention and encourage licking. As the ice melts, the fruit pieces become a fun little reward.
These treats can help rabbits stay cool and hydrated on especially warm days.
Frozen Water Bottles
Frozen water bottles or milk jugs can provide a longer-lasting cooling option.
Clean a plastic bottle or jug thoroughly and remove the label. Fill it with water, leaving space for expansion, and freeze it.
Once frozen, place the bottle in your rabbit’s living area. Many rabbits will lie next to the bottle to cool down.
Some rabbits may also play with the bottle as it melts. Because rabbits love to chew, keep an eye on the bottle and remove it if the rabbit begins chewing the plastic.
As the bottle melts, water may collect around it, so it is helpful to place it on a surface that can tolerate a little moisture.
Avoid Gel Ice Packs
Because rabbits will chew almost anything, it is best to avoid commercial ice packs or cooling mats.
Many of these products contain gel or chemical cooling substances that could be harmful if ingested.
Safer cooling options such as ceramic tiles, frozen water bottles, and cool water bowls work just as well without the added risk.
A Cool and Comfortable Summer
With a little preparation, it is easy to help rabbits stay comfortable during warm summer weather.
Small changes like chilled tiles, frozen bottles, or cool water can make a noticeable difference. Paying attention to your rabbit’s comfort during hot weather helps ensure that both you and your bunny can enjoy a safe and happy summer together.
