The Principles Behind Every Hot Cross Buns Rabbit
If you've spent any time exploring our website, you've probably noticed that Hot Cross Buns does some things a little differently.
Perhaps you've wondered why we don't always have babies available. Maybe you've noticed that our Placement Process isn't first-come, first-served, or that we ask prospective families to complete a detailed Placement Form before matching them with a rabbit. You may have even wondered why our placement fees are often higher than those you see elsewhere.
Those are all fair questions.
The answer, however, isn't found in our placement fees or our policies.
It's found in our principles.
From the very beginning, Hot Cross Buns has never been about producing as many rabbits as possible. Our desire has always been to raise exceptional companion rabbits, thoughtfully match them with families, and remain a source of support and encouragement long after Placement Day.
Every decision we make is guided by one simple question:
"What is best for this rabbit?"
It sounds simple and sometimes it is.
Other times, the answer requires us to choose the slower path, the harder path, or the more expensive path.
We believe those choices matter.
Thoughtful Breeding
Every litter is planned with intention, although we admit to the occasional "oops" litter.
While we absolutely love welcoming new babies into the rabbitry, we also recognize that every rabbit already in our care deserves our full attention and every reasonable opportunity to find the family that's right for them.
If wonderful young rabbits are still waiting for their forever homes, we'll postpone future breeding plans rather than continually bringing more babies into the world.
Could we breed more often?
Of course.
But doing what's possible isn't always the same as doing what's responsible.
Every Rabbit Deserves to Be Known
One of the greatest joys of raising rabbits is watching their personalities unfold.
Some are fearless explorers.
Some are quiet observers.
Some are comedians.
Others are gentle souls who simply want a peaceful place to belong.
Those personalities can't be discovered in a weekend.
They reveal themselves over time.
That's why we don't place rabbits simply because someone asked first. We believe successful placements happen when the right rabbit is thoughtfully matched with the right family.
Sometimes that means waiting a little longer until the family who truly belongs with that rabbit comes along.
We're perfectly comfortable with that.
A Commitment Beyond Placement Day
When our babies leave for their new homes, they're placed with the understanding that they'll be spayed or neutered when they're old enough. If any of our young rabbits remain with us beyond about five months of age, we're happy to take on that responsibility ourselves before placing them.
Whether a rabbit joins its family as a young baby or as a spayed or neutered junior, or as a retired breeding rabbit, our hope is exactly the same: that they'll enjoy a long, healthy, deeply loved life as a cherished companion.
That commitment doesn't end when a rabbit leaves our home.
We're still here to answer questions, celebrate milestones, help navigate challenges, and encourage families throughout their rabbit's life. One of the greatest joys of what we do is hearing from families months—and even years—later as they share stories and photographs of rabbits who are thriving.
Education Is Part of Our Responsibility
One thing many people don't see is how much of our time is spent doing work that has nothing to do with producing litters.
We spend countless hours researching rabbit health and behavior, writing articles, creating care guides, answering questions, and continually expanding the educational resources available on our website.
We don't do that because it increases sales.
We do it because we believe every rabbit deserves an informed caregiver.
Those resources are freely available to everyone—not just families who adopt from Hot Cross Buns.
In fact, as I sat down to write this article, our website had welcomed visitors from 23 U.S. states and 12 different countries in just the past couple of days. People from places as far away as Japan, Ireland, New Zealand, Finland, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia had found their way to Hot Cross Buns while searching for answers about rabbit care.
That is both humbling and deeply encouraging.
Most of those visitors will never adopt an HCB rabbit, and that's perfectly okay. If something we've written helps a family recognize the early signs of illness, better understand rabbit behavior, or simply enjoy a richer relationship with the rabbit they already love, then those hours were well spent.
Helping rabbits live healthier, happier lives has always been a bigger mission than our own rabbitry.
Every rabbit entrusted to our care is an individual life, not a product. We believe that distinction changes everything.
The Kind of Rabbitry We Choose to Be
Many of the principles that guide Hot Cross Buns don't lead to the quickest placements.
Many aren't the least expensive.
Some require us to say, "Not yet," when it would be easier—and more profitable—to say, "Yes."
Our placement fees simply reflect those choices.
Not because we've tried to determine the highest price someone might be willing to pay, but because we've chosen to build a rabbitry around a different set of priorities.
Thoughtful breeding instead of constant breeding.
Careful placements instead of quick placements.
Education instead of keeping knowledge to ourselves.
Relationships instead of transactions.
Lifelong support instead of a handshake at the door.
We know our approach won't be the right fit for every family, and that's perfectly okay. There are many caring breeders and rescues serving rabbits in different ways, and we're grateful for every person who is working to improve the lives of these remarkable little animals.
As for us, we'll continue asking the same question we've asked from the very beginning:
"What is best for this rabbit?"
As long as that question remains at the heart of every decision we make, we believe everything else—including our placement fees—will naturally follow.
Those principles aren't just something we talk about. They're something we strive to live, one rabbit at a time.
