When a family brings home their very first rabbit, excitement and emotions tend to run high. Most people tend to expect quite little bundles of cuddles and a Bambi-esque storybook life of sweet moments. Not to say that those memories don’t happen, but we often chuckle at our clients’ reactions when they discover what life with a pet rabbit is really like.
They eat a lot more hay than expected. Healthy bunnies who love their hay (and they should!)--REALLY love their hay. Case in point, our does Henrietta, Francesca, and Boggle consider it a full-body love affair. They sit in their hay, roll in it, and chow down like the contestants at a dainty hotdog eating contest. They each receive two huge handfuls of hay in the morning and two more in the evening. Tip for new owners: Don't bother with the small bags/boxes of hay when you order or purchase it. Stock up because more is always needed sooner than anticipated.
They produce poo balls perpetually. We've called them little PEZ dispensers before and the description still stands. They just sort of pop out as the bunny hops along. I think our first Holland Lop, Plum Bun still holds the record of 42 poo balls in five minutes. She was excellent at using her litter box, but when she was busy playing, she never noticed the trail she was leaving scattered behind. We didn't know whether to laugh or stand in awe of her production prowess.
Persnickety rabbits are very determined to have their own way. If a bunny wants the food bowl in a particular corner, that's where it will be, no ifs, ands, or buts. They'll thump, toss, and throw things until their message is received and their people finally obey. Let's just say sassy bunnies make excellent household managers.
Bringing home a new rabbit is full of surprises, but their quirks are what make them so endearing. From hay to poo balls to bossy, demanding personalities, rabbits have a way of keeping us laughing, leaning, and loving them more every day. It's a wonderful new journey every day!
